Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act
In our ongoing efforts to keep you up to date on the changes to school meal programs related to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA), there is new activity to report. First, the school breakfast program will implement changes this year. These changes range from increases fruit, vegetable and grain requirements to decreases in sodium.

Second, at the end of June 2013, the USDA released its interim final rule for competitive foods and beverages with a 120 day comment period. This interim rule is being referred to as the “Smart Snacks in Schools”. The primary purpose of the rule is to ensure that foods and beverages sold in competition with school meals (competitive foods) are consistent with the most recent dietary guidelines. The nutrition standards specified in the interim final rule will go into effect July 1, 2014.
